<image:caption>Acrylic, pastels, paper on canvas I fused a 1966 Batman and Robin into a single character, layered with symbols, fragments, and interruptions. It was one of my largest paintings from this period at 5ft long and was later featured in Atomic Ranch magazine. I also created a few different custom variations of the piece for clients.</image:caption>

<image:title>Early Work - Graffiti Abstracts - VFRR</image:title>
<image:caption>Acrylic on canvas Like many works from this period, this painting is loose, emotive, and exploratory, more signal than resolution. It draws from a childhood head injury and the strange events that followed, including visions that would shape the course of my life.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Acrylic and pastels on canvas, 30x60” Drawn in part from a 1915 billboard image of a steelworker, this painting pushed into figuration while still holding onto the layered abrasion and mark-making of the earlier work. Looking back, it feels like an early glimpse of a visual language that would take years to fully emerge in my work, bringing abstraction, graffiti, and figuration into closer balance. The painting was stolen after my first show.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Acrylic, pastels, paper collage on canvas, 24x48” Part of a recurring science-fiction obsession and dual-figure theme I explored across a number of paintings. Earlier versions now feel like experiments leading to this one, where that split presence became more fully realized.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Acrylic & pastels on canvas, 48x24” Paintings shaped by dream fragments, early visions, and half-remembered imagery were a big theme for me. Rather than resolving into a single scene, it pulls together scraps of text, figures, symbols, and atmosphere as if trying to catch something just before it disappears.</image:caption>

<image:title>Early Work - Graffiti Abstracts - Weird Science</image:title>
<image:caption>Acrylic & pastels on canvas, 48x24” Rather than beginning with a fixed idea, I often approached painting in this period through searching, exploration, and a kind of automatic process. This piece grew that way, starting with a few colors or symbols and layering from there. I would respond to what surfaced, covering, revising, and letting accidents stay if they carried energy, until the image found a strange but instinctive balance. What I was after was not polish, but a sense of internal coherence that felt discovered rather than imposed.</image:caption>

<image:title>Early Work - Structure & Surface - Hive</image:title>
<image:caption>Acrylic & pastels on canvas, 36x48” In this piece, I used a milk crate and industrial grid frames to establish a geometry with rules, but only loosely followed them. What interested me was not precision for its own sake, but the tension between system and drift, a kind of architectural structure and weathering. I’d experiment with these themes in many paintings of this period.</image:caption>

<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/64a6f829d8f9e851e7821c79/38998766-7e1d-4c6c-a456-f8112ee2cef2/bill-oneil-suzukigo.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Early Work - Structure & Surface - Suzukigo</image:title>
<image:caption>Digital composition Created alongside the paintings from this period, this piece reflects the same movement toward geometry, repetition, and formal balance. In the digital medium, those ideas became more fluid and precise, giving the work a different kind of clarity without losing its sense of energy.</image:caption>

<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/64a6f829d8f9e851e7821c79/c1f8e16a-99b5-46ab-abda-06925ba2b6e3/billoneil-magnet.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Early Work - Structure & Surface - Magnet</image:title>
<image:caption>Acrylic on canvas With this piece, I was working toward a stronger graphic form without giving up the weathered surface and tactile irregularities that still felt essential. It reflects a point where the work was becoming more controlled, but not yet detached from the roughness that gave it life.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>Early Work - Structure & Surface - Fizz</image:title>
<image:caption>Acrylic on canvas This painting came near the end of the period, when I was starting to bring more energy and looseness back into the work. I used found tools, including wine corks, to stamp and build the surface, letting repetition, accident, and texture carry more of the composition. What interested me here was not polish, but a more physical and instinctive kind of rhythm. The piece was commissioned by a client who wanted something festive and energetic, and this felt like a natural place for it to land.</image:caption>

<image:title>Early Work - Structure & Surface - Magma Three</image:title>
<image:caption>Acrylic on canvas I wanted to lean into more dynamic color and heavier texture here, almost pushing the surface toward sculpture. The painting became densely layered and weathered, somewhere between volcanic force and graphic abstraction. It sits in that space between structure and atmosphere.</image:caption>

<image:title>Early Work - Figures, Forms & Symbols - Madonna</image:title>
<image:caption>Acrylic on canvas This painting reflects the point where figuration, abstraction, and a more deliberate sense of structure began to converge. The figure is broken into planes and fragments, but held together through balance, contrast, and rhythm rather than realism.</image:caption>

<image:title>Early Work - Figures, Forms & Symbols - The Visitor</image:title>
<image:caption>Digital artwork This piece began as a more conventional landscape, but I kept pushing it away from certainty. By introducing the spacecraft and the helmeted deer, the scene became harder to place in time or world, somewhere between the familiar and the altered. I wanted it to feel beautiful, unsettling, and quietly ominous all at once.</image:caption>

<image:title>Early Work - Figures, Forms & Symbols - Space Invader</image:title>
<image:caption>Digital artwork This piece came out of several influences colliding at once: mid-century modern design, cubism, and a lot of misspent time playing pinball and video arcade machines. What emerged was less a literal character than a kind of emblematic presence, built through shape, contrast, and reduction.</image:caption>

<image:title>Early Work - Figures, Forms & Symbols - Atlas</image:title>
<image:caption>Scratchboard I had been sketching figures for a long time, and with this piece that impulse started surfacing more directly in the artwork. Created as a scratchboard, it was influenced in part by a Russian Constructivist exhibition I saw in Minneapolis, which pushed me toward a more graphic, simplified, and monumental treatment of the figure.</image:caption>
